Indonesia: looking back at the colony

Take a look in advance

The film begins on the ocean, sailing forward. Then land looms in the distance. "I am Dutch. I saw the land overseas that made us rich." Suddenly it is all around, the land of rice paddies, mosques and volcanoes. It is the 21st century and the traveler sees Indonesia, full of questions: What happened here? A colony of the Netherlands? It feels like a mystery, in this land of secrets and that menacing nature. There the ground trembles...

Indonesia: Revisiting the Colony is a cinematic essay in 15 short chapters, consisting of newly shot material, historical footage, animations and a leading narrative voice. In saying goodbye, the film calls for a new step in looking back at this past. Accept that this has happened. The Netherlands must get away from the cramp about its history. Facts enough, finally accept them. Then we can move on with relief. 'Reality, how nice that would be.'
