The Beast is loosely inspired by Henry James' 1903 story The Beast in the Jungle. The book is about a man paralyzed by his neurotic belief that something terrible is about to befall him, a beast invisibly huddled in the jungle of the future. He lets the best years of his life pass by, until the denouement where he learns that the great misfortune of his life was to throw it away and ignore the love of a good woman, based on his ridiculous sense of doom.

Director Bertrand Bonello does not want to tell us that the only thing we should be afraid of is fear itself. No - He wants to tell us that we should be really afraid - very afraid. The beast is not in the jungle, it is in the house, and it is in the air we can barely breathe when the film reaches the year 2044. It is in us; we are it.

The film ends not with a credits, but with a QR code. Don't forget to scan the code!
