Gimme Shelter (re-release)

Take a look in advance

The final concert of the Gimme Shelter tour gets completely out of hand. A clash between 300,000 people from the so-called "Love Generation" and a dozen Hells Angels hired to keep order leads to the tragic death of 18-year-old Meredith Hunter, who is killed with stabbings. The final concert of the Gimme Shelter tour gets completely out of hand. A clash between 300,000 people from the so-called "Love Generation" and a dozen Hells Angels hired to keep order leads to the tragic death of 18-year-old Meredith Hunter, who is killed with stabbings. Only four months after the so peaceful Woodstock, this Altamont concert seems to mark the end of the loving hippie era.

Directors David Maysles, Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin were present and captured the events on film as The Rolling Stones struggled through the concert doing what they do best - making music. The documentary features footage from both Woodstock and the Altamont concert, as well as the band members' reactions as they watch the tragic events unfold. Gimme Shelter premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1971 (53 years ago!) and was also released in Dutch cinemas later that year. VPRO Cinema rated the documentary five stars at the time.
